Parents

As a mum or dad (or carer/guardian) YOU are the most important person in helping your son/daughter achieve their potential. Here are some ways you can engage in your child's education and learning.

Parents

Support learning at home
Parents play a vital role in children's learning and development. Parents should encourage and support their children's learning at home and in the community.

You do not have to be an expert in the school work or subject they are studying; be positive, encouraging and show an interest.

Go to Parent Evenings
Schools, paretns and carers have a shared duty to work together to educate children. The best way to share this duty is to attend parent meetings/events. It also helps to take an interest in your child's school work and to discuss with the school how you can support your child's learning.

Parent representation
Most schools have a Parent Council, which is an informal way for parents to be involved in their child's school. Working with the school, the Parent Council can help with anything from fundraising to shaping school policy. All schools have a Parent Forum, and as a parent you are automatically a member. Ask the school when meetings are held, or check the school handbook or website.

To help your son/daughter in achieving their potential we work with 30 FOCUS West schools with S3 to S6 pupils. We also hold events for parents: check out the programme of events to find out when the next FOCUS on Families event will take place at your child's school.

Instead of waiting for the school to contact or inform you, you could take the initiative in supporting your son/daughter's education. You have a valuable contribution to make. If you are a parent or a member of a parent group and you feel you could  benefit from some FOCUS on Families information, please contact the Families and Schools Partnership Officer.
